Canal Walk in Leitrim Village in aid of Concern

55 people took to the streets of Leitrim Village on Saturday, August 20^th last for what is popularly known as the ‘Canal Walk’. The event was organized in remembrance of the late Father Aengus Finucane who was a charity worker in Bangladesh during the 70’s.

Originally from Limerick, Father Finucane was a member of the Spiritan Community or The Holy Ghost Fathers as they were formally known. They were the driving force behind the Concern Organisation for 40 years. Concern is a highly respected charity organisation which is internationally regarded for its work with the poor and marginalised in difficult times and in areas of conflict and poverty. Father Finucane worked tirelessly to alleviate hunger and suffering and left
his own legacy by inspiring and motivating others to continue on his mantra of what he termed “Love in Action”, and the funds raised from this walk will go
towards a Concern project in his name in Bangladesh. The event was organized by Maureen Gillen and Anne Carey as a Community Project out of their participation in a Landmark Education programme and is has so far raised €4,500.

Climbing for Children – Landmark Leader Tackles Mt. Kilimanjaro

Olivia Seery’s project in Landmark Education’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program was titled ‘Back to Africa for Ireland’s Children’, and involved her attempting to climb Kenya’s Mt. Kilimanjaro as part of a fundraising effort for an Irish Children’s charity. In the end, with a theme of community and contribution, Seery raised over €5,000 for Barnados as a result of her efforts.

Seery, who leads Landmark’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program in Ireland, began by working in her local community in a variety of ways to support Barnados. She had her supermarket put out contribution pails and, with the enthusiastic support of her friends, she raised money through various events at her church, her tennis club, and a village pub. All the while she trained for the climb through running and work in her gym.

When she flew into Tanzania, it was the first time she had been in Africa since a 1982 safari to Kenya, when she had barely glimpsed Mt. Kilimanjaro through the clouds. Earlier, in 1971 to 1974 Seery had taught at a secondary school in Zambia.

18 trekkers supporting Barnados in Seery set up from their hotel after getting briefed by the tour organiser and tour doctor about the difficulties they would face. For three days Seery climbed with the group and their support team of porters. At a camp approximately 4,330 m. high Seery experienced symptoms of severe dehydration and altitude sickness – she needed to put on an immediate IV drip, and soon had to be carried back down.

Seery was incredibly moved by the support of the porters and the official mountain rescue team, which took her down on a metal trolley. Seery reports no regrets at all at not having reached the summit – at 66 years old, she gave it everything she had, both in the climb and in her fundraising for the children.

Dawn 10k walk/run Funds Football Match

A 10 kilometre walk/run fundraiser took place at dawn on Saturday August 6th, thanks to the efforts of Bernadette Glancy, who pioneered the event as her community project while taking part in Landmark Education’s Self-Expression and Leadership Program.

The event began bright and early, with registration at the St. Mary’s GAA club house in Carrick on Shannon at 5:30 in the morning, and the event itself starting at 6:00. Participants got a free breakfast, shower and prizes, and the 10k took them through a stretch of beautiful country.

All of the €15 entrance fees went to support the Leitrim Ladies TG4 Intermediate Championship game, which took place versus London the following day.

Landmark’s Direct Access Course Coming in Autumn

Landmark Education has announced the launch of a new programme that is debuting this autumn around the world. Direct Access: Creating and Living a Future Your Really Want, is a two day course that is bringing advances in neuroscience to an examination of how to easily and effectively find yourself in action towards what is important to you.
